BCM-95® and Biocurcumin®
BCM-95® (also known as Biocurcumin®) is a patented formulation of Curcumin, Demethoxycurcuminoid, Bis-demethoxycurcuminoid) and Aromatic-turmerone (also known as Ar-Turmerone). New Jersey based DolCas Biotech LLC, in partnership with Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd of Kerala, India, developed and patented BCM-95® using a unique extraction method. The method also used environmentally friendly, solar powered, production techniques and the extract can now be found in may Curcumin supplements.
Dried turmeric rhizomes (underground stems) can only produce around 1% to 5% of essential oils with the vast majority of those essential oils being made up of sesquiterpenes. Not only a great scrabble word but sesquiterpenes, a constituent of Turmeric, give it its aroma and taste as well as being antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. The largest amount of sesquiterpenes found in dried turmeric rhizomes is Ar-Turmerone which ranges from 30% to 60%. BCM-95® is made up of 86% curcuminoids plus up to 9% essential oils giving it its 95 moniker.
Turmeric is an healthy food to eat by itself as it contains over 230 active compounds, including Curcumin which is the most well known. It would be advisable to include Turmeric in your day to day cooking as well as supplementing with Curcumin. In recent years, attention has increasingly been paid to the other active compounds especially Ar-turmerone. Ar-Turmerone has been found to enhance the bio-availability of Curcumin which has long been a concern for researchers and the general public who take Curcumin supplements. Bio-availability refers to how well a substance is absorbed and how long the substance stays in the body. Therefore the more a Curcumin supplement can be absorbed by the body and for longer, the better the Curcumin supplement will work.
The developers believe that by bringing together the essential oils and Curcuminoids together in one supplement, they can enhance its bio-availability. A recent research paper entitled 'A Pilot Cross-Over Study to Evaluate Human Oral Bioavailability of BCM-95®CG (Biocurcumax™) A Novel Bio-enhanced Preparation of Curcumin' looked at this very problem. The researchers found that when they used a proprietary formulation BCM-95® called Biocurcumax™ it performed better than ordinary Curcumin with regard to bio-availability as it was absorbed faster and was retained in the body longer.
A recent study focusing on osteoarthritis used a BCM-95® and Boswellia serrata (Bospure) extract called Rhulief™ and compared it with a typical COX-2 inhibitor. COX-2 is an enzyme in the body that is responsible for inflammation and pain. Typically Ibuprofen and Naproxen amongst others are used as pain killers due to their COX-2 inhibitory qualities. In the study Rhulief™ was compared with Celecoxib (Celebrex) another well known COX-2 inhibitor. In the study, 28 patients who were both male and female, between the ages of 18 to 65, were divided into two groups. One group were given Celecoxib 100mg twice a day and the other group were given the Rhulief™ (containing BCM-95®) 500mg twice a day. Once the study had finished, the researchers found that 93% of the Rhulief™ subjects were able to walk more than 1000 meters compared to 86% of the Celecoxib group. 93% of the Rhulief™ group also reported better pain management compared to 79% of the Celecoxib group. The researchers also reported no serious side effects from taking the supplements. The reports authors were Dr. B. Anthony and Dr. R. Kizhakedath.
A number of studies have been undertaken using BCM-95® which looked at Urinary Health, Mood and Stress, Cognitive Function, Inflammation, Bio-availability, Prostate Health, Breast Health, Liver Health and Invitro Studies. BCM-95® was found to improve health outcomes in the studies.
Curcumin 95 Fights Alzheimer's Disease
In late 2014, a US patent (US Patent No. 8859020) was awarded to Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd for its BCM-95® extract for the potential treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Previous research (Chinese University of Hong Kong - Professor Larry Baum - 2008) found that the formula was helpful in reducing amyloid plaques In Alzheimer's patients as well as increasing vitamin E levels. Both of which helped alleviate cognitive decline in Alzheimer sufferers. BCM-95® studies can be found in over 23 peer-reviewed publications with 15 patents in the United states, India and Japan. The extract has also been used as an aid for chemotherapy in cancer sufferers because it has been found to improve chemotherapy's effectiveness in killing types of cancer cells previously resistant to chemotherapy.
